In addition to its culinary uses, Peppermint has a long history of being used for its health benefits, including aiding digestion, relieving headaches, and soothing symptoms of cold and flu. Its natural menthol content also provides a cooling sensation when used in topical applications.

 

Peppermint is widely used for its relaxing effects on the digestive system muscles. It can be used to help stimulate bile flow and digestive juices which then assist in the breakdown and elimination of food. Peppermint has been long used for nausea, vomiting, spasmodic issues/pain in the bowels, and diarrhea.

 

Analgesic: Pain relief.

Antiemetic: Prevents or reduces nausea and vomiting.

Anti-inflammatory: Controls inflammation, a reaction to injury or infection.

Antimircrobial: Kills microorganisms such as bacteria or mold, or stops them from growing and causing disease.

Antioxidant: A substance that protects cells from the damage caused by free radicals.

Antispasmodic: Calms nervous and muscular spasms or convulsions.

Safety: Peppermint may decrease esophageal sphincter pressure so caution should be taken by people with gastroesophageal reflux or hiatal hernia. Use with caution with GI ulcers or GI inflammation. Peppermint can help with digestion and stomach pain but can worsen acid reflux.
