Catnip - Nepeta cataria

Qualities/Actions: Loves a sunny spot to grow and will produce a bountiful harvest in its first year. Can be found near streams, fields, dry banks, and waste places. The drier the growing conditions, the more aromatic the catnip seems to be. Harvest the leaves and flowers as they come into bloom. Used as a mild tranquilizer. Catnip is a good choice as a nervine for children. 
 
Great for easingcolic, expelling gas, teething discomfort, tooth aches, and soothing spasms and restleness. Very valued for babies and children. 
 
Analgesic: Pain relieving. 
Anticatarrhal: Removes excess mucous from the body.
Antispasmodic: Calms nervous and muscular spasms or convulsions.
Aperient: Gently causes the bowels to move.
Bitter:  Support digestion and to treat ailments such as bloating, nausea and heartburn.
Carminative: Expels gas from the stomach or intestines so as to relieve flatulence or abdominal pain or distension.
Diaphoretic: Increase sweating.
Emmenagogue: Stimulates or increases menstrual flow.
Nervine: Acts therapeutically upon the nerves, particularly in the sense of a sedative that serves to calm ruffled nerves.
Sedative: Exerts a soothing, tranquilizing effect on the body.
 
Common Use: Infusion, Tincture.
An infusion mixed with honey makes a great tea for coughs. It can also be used as a compress for bruises, headaches, skin lesions and scalp irritations. Great as an infusion in combination with Chamomile and Lemon Balm for a children's daily tonic.
 
Safety: Should be avoided in pregnancy.
 
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container.
