Plantain - Plantago major

Qualities/Actions: Plantain is a versatile herb that is popular for its medicinal properties. It has been used for centuries to heal wounds, soothe skin irritations, and reduce inflammation. The dried leaves can be used to make teas, poultices, or tinctures to relieve coughs, treat digestion issues, and alleviate symptoms of respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. Plantain is also known for its astringent properties and can be used to treat insect bites, minor cuts, and skin rashes. Additionally, it is high in vitamins A, C, and K, as well as minerals like calcium and potassium, making it a beneficial addition to any herbal medicine cabinet.


Plantain is regarded as a "lance" that penetrates and opens up the wound to draw out poison. This makes it a great first-aid herb for wounds, scrapes, bites, cuts, splinters, and stings. It can also be used to soothe a sting from stinging nettles, poison ivy, and even a sunburn.


Plantain has anti-inflammatory and astringent properties that help to soothe chronic skin conditions while toning the skin tissues. It is beneficial for conditions such as; eczema, rosacea, shingles, varicose veins and hemorrhoids.


Plantain leaf is an effective vilnerary fir GI mucous membranes. Its mucilage content helps to soothe inflammation as well as moisten dry mucosa. This makes it useful for inflammatory nbowel disorders, as well as dryness associated with constipation. 


Antibacterial:  Contain compounds that directly deter pathogenic bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoans.

Anti-inflammatory: Controls inflammation, a reaction to injury or infection.

Antiviral: Effective against viruses.

Astringent: Causes contraction of body tissues, checks blood flow, or restricts the secretion of fluids.

Demulcent: Relieves inflammation or irritation.

Vulnerary: Wound healing.


Common Use: Infusion, Tincture, Poultice.


Safety: Plantain leaf should be avoided by people with bowel obstruction and taken with at least 8oz of liquid. Otherwise, it is regarded as safe.


Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container.
